Traveling with your pet can be a stressful process. After all, as a pet parent, you want to do everything you can to keep your furry friend safe and healthy at all times. Traveling with your pet is certainly possible but there are a few things you should keep in mind before you leave for your trip.

Pet carriers

The first step in planning to travel with your pet is finding them a reliable carrier. It’s important to find a carrier that is approved by TSA also. We will touch more on plane travel tips a little bit later. If you are able to put items in your pet’s carrier that brings them comfort, this should ease their anxiety during the traveling process. For example, you can put their favorite blanket or a favorite toy in their carrier. Having something comforting can be extremely helpful to help your pet feel some solace during the traveling journey.

Other necessary items

You will also want to make sure that you have some necessary supplies when you travel with your pet, regardless of the method of travel you choose. Some essential items you will need are food, bowls, treats, waste bags or litter box, collar and leash, medications, and vaccine records. While you might not need all of these items during your travels, it’s better to be safe when you will be away from home.

Car safety

Depending on the specific temperament of your pet, they may either love or dislike car rides. Regardless, they should be in their carrier for most of the ride. If you have a dog that you would like to let out of their carrier every few hours, this is okay. But just make sure that they don’t distract the driver or try to get out the window. For safety purposes, it is best practice to leave them in the carrier for most of the drive.

Plane travel

Air travel can actually be easier on pets due to the fact that it is usually faster than driving. When you plan to travel on a plane with your pet you do have to purchase a ticket for them ahead of time. In addition to this, you will usually be required to hold your pet when you go through the metal detector in security. It can be helpful to keep your pet on a leash even while you are holding them. This is to prevent them from running to hide somewhere in the airport.

Your furry friend will likely be nervous the first few times you travel with them. Hopefully, over time, they will get used to the process and won’t be so anxious. Traveling with your pet can be an enjoyable process if both of you are able to get through the tough parts. Bringing your pet along for a journey can be a great way to strengthen your relationship and make new memories. All in all, you both will have a paw-some time exploring new places together!
